A large number of local people dropped in for a coffee and a browse among the stalls in Framfield Church Hall for the Macmillan annual CoffeeMorning in September. Over the whole of the county nearly 1200 coffee mornings were held, and this one raised £182. The committee also stood outside Tesco's for its annual collection and couldn't believe the amount raised - £1,047. Thank you to all who contributed to both events.
As screening and treatments improve, more and more people are living with cancer in their daily lives. 1.2 million of us are living with it today. This means that aswell as medical help, people affected by cancer need practical, emotional and financial support and to meet these needs Macmillan is changing and broadening its range of services.
If anyone feels they need personal help or advice on matters relating to cancer or just general information on Macmillan Cancer Support, please ring the Freephone Macmillan Cancerline on 0808 808 2020 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk.
Our next fund raising event is Burns Night on Saturday 2nd February 2008 at Ringmer Community College. Please contact us on one of the numbers below if you would like more information.
Meanwhile, a Very Happy Christmas and Good Wishes for the New Year to you all, and thank you again for your support throughout the year.

From the Parish Newsletter October/November 2007:
Donating unwanted foreign currency is a really easy way for people to support MACMILLAN. We can turn that unwanted currency into cash to improve the lives of people living with cancer.
Everyone knows recycling is good for the environment but, it can be good for MACMILLAN as well - if you use a printer or fax machine, each used cartridge could earn us around £1.
MACMILLAN also receives £5 for each old mobile phone they are sent.
You can send foreign currency, old phones or cartridges to Ann Press or you can find details of recycling by visiting:
www.recyclingappeal.com/macmillan
MACMILLAN are holding a one day conference for anyone affected by cancer who would like to share their experiences to help make changes happen to the future of cancer care. The conference is in London on 24th November 2007.

As you may have noticed in the title, 'support' has replaced 'relief. The charity decided that the word 'relief gives the impression of someone needing only medical help, whereas Macmillan has grown over the years to a charity not only helping medically but by providing practical, emotional and financial support as well. One in three of us will get cancer, but 1.2 million are living with it - and everyone needs help in some way or another.
Our fund raising has gone well recently; £540 was raised at the Uckfield Street Collection, and a wonderful £578 on tea and cakes at The Grange, Framfield. At our AGM in April our Treasurer informed us we had raised £21,768.62 for the year 2005 - we couldn't have done this without the support of so many of you in and around the parish; thank you.
Coming up are more Teas at Hobbs Barton on 3rd, 4th, 5th June at 2.00pm; Teas at Bardown Oast, Stonegate on 11th June at 2.00pm; Midsummer Magic on 24th June 7.30pm at Heatherden, Cross In Hand (summer dining with jazz band & cabaret); Golf Day on 7th July. For more information on any of these things please contact the number below.

For those who attended our Burns Night back in January, you may like to know that we raised a record sum of £3,177 - thank you so much for your support. It was a lovely evening, great fun and most people managed to dance off the haggis with a number of Scottish dances as the evening wore on!
Our meetings are mainly taken up with organising future fund raising events. For those of you interested in gardens, we will be providing -
TEA & CAKES UNDER THE NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME
FRAMFIELD GRANGE SUNDAY 7th MAY FROM 2.00PM
HOBBS BARTON, FRAMFIELD 3rd, 4th AND 5th JUNE
Our AGM will take place on Wednesday 26* April and if you like golf then our bi-annual Golf Day is on Friday 7* July at East Sussex National Golf Club. Following the golf there is an evening dinner and auction. Please contact the number below for more information.
Unfortunately there are very few of us who don't come into contact with cancer, either through family or friends, and MCR is one of a number of charities trying to ease the situation for those concerned. From the Parish Newsletter February/March 2006:
"My mother had cancer, and it was a different world then. What I remember is silence and fear, a feeling of absolute helplessness. It was so different for me when I was given my diagnosis in 1999. The whole atmosphere has changed. You can talk about it now. And Macmillan has helped me to understand and cope with the different treatments ".
Douglas Macmillan would have loved to have heard those words - they were what he had in mind when he started the charity. Now, although the Macmillan nurse remains at the heart of the work, there are many more sides to Macmillan Cancer Relief than just the nurses - patient grants, doctors, specialists, buildings, to name just a few.
We have been raising funds for many years now and it was lovely to hear recently that four of our committee have been awarded medals for their long service to Macmillan - Jacky Bennett, Helena Billing, Christine Fogden and Diana Gooch.
On 23rd March Sandy Rogers is hosting a Clothes Sale at Greenacres, Holland Park Farm between 10.30am-4.30pm. Name-brand clothes will be sold at reduced prices. For more information please contact Sandy on 01825 840648 (arrangements can also be made to attend the previous evening). A percentage of the money raised will be given to Macmillan.
Our bi-annual Golf Day is taking place on Friday 7* July at East Sussex National Golf Club. This takes the form of a shot-gun start for teams of four, followed in the evening by dinner and an auction. Please contact the number below for more information.

From the Parish Newsletter December 2005/January 2006
When the name Macmillan is mentioned the majority of people still tend to think mainly of Macmillan Nurses, but the money our supporters so generously give now goes towards many other aspects of the Society. There are now around 2,700 nurses, 350 doctors and 500 other health and social care professionals such as dietitians; radiographers; occupational, speech and language therapists; physiotherapists; pharmacists; clinical psychologists; benefits advisers and social workers.
So when you see us holding a tin outside Tesco's as we did recently, the money donated (£740 approx) goes towards a large number of Macmillan posts, all of which help people living with cancer in our area. Last year you helped our committee raise £24,388 and with so many other worthwhile causes around, we are extremely grateful to all who support us.
Our own Macmillan nurse, Sarah Wheatly (in her hard earned spare time!) along with the wife of a patient and a Macmillan doctor took part in the Kilimanjaro Hike in September and they have raised around £30,000, an amazing achievement.
We are once again organising our annual Burns Night on 21st January 2006. Tickets are £17.50 each for a three course meal which includes the haggis being piped in plus Scottish dancing during the evening. If you would like to come along we would love to see you. Please ring the number below for more information.

From the Parish Newsletter October/November 2005:
Among the many different services that Macmillan offer is the Macmillan Benefits Helpline which is a telephone advice service for people with cancer, their families and carers who need help to access benefits and other kinds of financial support.
The helpline started in July 2003 to help people with cancer access the millions of pounds of benefits that currently go unclaimed because of lack of awareness. Macmillan's recent research found that this totals £126.5 million across the UK. As well as statutory benefits such as Disability Living Allowance, Housing Benefit and tax credits, they also advise on other benefits such as grants and disabled parking badges. To access this information call 0808 801 0304.
If you receive this magazine in time - our own committee's ongoing fund raising activities for East Sussex include helping with the Annual Macmillan Coffee Morning at Pizza Express on 30!h September and a Concert at Holy Cross Church on Saturday l5t October at 730pm with the Chantry Singers, Colin Tarn and John Marsh.
During September one of our Macmillan Nurses, Sarah Wheatley, based in Uckfield Hospital took part in the Kilimanjaro Hike, along with the wife of one of her patients and a Macmillan Doctor. This was all part of raising funds for Macmillan. It will be interesting to get her report of how she managed the climb.

From the Parish Newsletter August/September 2005:
I lose track of the number of times I thank you for attending our various fund raising activities, especially as there are so many other worthwhile charities vying for your support. For those who went along to look at the beautiful garden at Hobbs Barton, you participated in eating cakes and drinking tea to the tune of just over £500! Our walk, too, around the lovely country in Blackboys on a beautiful sunny evening produced £270 - many thanks to you all.
The last Appeal for which we helped to raise money towards a GP Facilitator and Primary Care Nurse, both now in situ in the Uckfield area, has now closed and (surprise, surprise) a new Appeal started. Unfortunately, although so much is being done to alleviate cancer, statistics show that every year in Sussex alone 7,000 people are told they have the condition. Thanks to generous local people, patients in Sussex already receive care and support from over 80 Macmilian specialist nurses, doctors, dietitians and therapists, as well as financial help.
The new Appeal, Macmillan in Sussex, aims to raise fl'Am over 4 years. Among other appointments, specialists in stomach and gynaecological cancers, and a speech and language therapist helping patients learn to swallow and recover their speech after surgery, will be based in the Eastbourne and Brighton hospitals.
The annual Macmilian Coffee Morning will take place on Friday 30* September and we are organising a Concert at Holy Cross Church on the 1st October. Please ring me for more details nearer the time if you would like to support us.

From the Parish Newsletter June/July 2005:
The National Gardens Scheme has been opening gardens to the public to raise money for charity for more than 75 years. It gives the proceeds to 6 charities each year, and 2005 not only marks 20 years since the NGS began supporting Macmillan, but it sees the funds raised reach an amazing £10 million. This has enabled Macmillan to fund a total of 123 nurses over the years, who in mm have helped thousands of people living with cancer.
As a committee we are pleased to accept the invitation to provide teas and cakes at the gardens that are open in our parish, and this money comes straight back into our area. Kathy and Jack Gore opened their beautiful grounds at The Grange in May and we raised the remarkable amount of £427. We will also be serving teas at Hobbs Barton on 4th/5th and 6th June, the lovely gardens tended by Valerie and Jeremy Cark. Do please come along and wander around.
Our Quiz Night in April was a most enjoyable evening, and for those who came along and braved the questions, you might like to know that you helped raise £600 - thank you very much.
On Saturday 16th July there will be an Evening of Entertainment with Supper at Wellingham Barn, near Lewes. For more information on this please contact me on the number below.
